STDs: What you need to know about STDs or sexually transmitted diseases

STDs or Sexually Transmitted Diseases is the term used to describe any form of ailment that can be transmitted through sexual intercourse. Such diseases are contacted when you have sexual intercourse with a carrier without protection. Other names for STDs are STI, an acronym for Sexually Transmitted Infection and VD; Veneral Disease.

Some of the infections being transmitted through unprotected sex can be contacted even when you are always practicing safe intercourse. However, sharing of needles or other sharp objects can transmit the infection. As well, children contact these infections through breastfeeding.

 

Types of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

There are various types of infections that can be transmitted through sexual intercourse. The most common ones are discussed below:

 

Chlamydia

The most common STD among Americans is Chlamydia, an infection caused by bacteria. It can as well be passed to a newborn baby through the mother. When left untreated, Chlamydia can cause urethra or prostate gland infections and infertility.

Symptoms that are developed by people suffering from Chlamydia include:

  • Lower abdomen pain
  • Discomfort during sex
  • Vagina or penis discharge with green or yellow colour

Gonorrhea

Another sexually transmitted infection caused by bacteria is Gonorrhea. While this is not that deadly when given appropriate treatment, being careless with it can lead to serious ailments such as infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease or PID as well as prostate gland infections. Gonorrhea can be passed to a newborn baby through the mother and cause severe complications to the baby.

Common symptoms of gonorrhea are:

  • Penis and vagina discharge with a white, beige, green or yellow colour
  • Severe discomfort during sex
  • Serious itching around the male and female genitals
  • Sore throat

 

HIV

Perhaps the most feared STD, Human Immunodeficiency Virus is one of the deadliest as it tends to damage the strength of the body’s immune system. This means having this disease opens the body system to having some other deadly infections that are caused by viruses and bacteria. Unless you give it the deserved care and treatment, it can graduate to stage 3 HIV also known as AIDS.

Symptom of HIV are:

  • Chills
  • Headache and fever
  • Nausea and rashes
  • Severe aches and pains
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes

While there is no recorded cure for HIV as at the time of writing this, there are several ways to treat it and live a healthy long life especially when it gets immediate attention at early stage.

 

Syphilis

Syphilis is caused by bacteria and in most cases goes unnoticed especially at early stages. However, as it gets deeper, the carrier of this infection begins to experience the followings:

  • Fatigue and severe fever
  • Headaches and joint pain
  • Hair and weight loss

Unless you do not mind getting hearth diseases that can lead to death, loss of vision, memory or hearing, or go as far as developing mental illness, you need to get medical attention as soon as you start experiencing the symptoms.

Other sexually transmitted diseases are:

  • Chandcroid
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Herpes
  • Human Papilomavirus (HP)
  • Pubic lice
  • Scabies

 

STDs that can be easily cured

While some STDs take extraordinary treatment to get cured, many of them can be gotten rid of easily. Among these are:

  • Crabs
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Tricholoniasis
